New Blog - April 17th 2009
Hi everyone – we haven’t been in touch for a while so thought we’d fill you in on our Honey Ryder news…….
Martyn and I have had a great 2009 so far. In January we went to the South of France to perform at a music conference called ‘Midem’. We met loads of great people, played on the same bill as Justin Hawkins (ex Darkness frontman) and paid a hell of a lot of Euros for a rum and coke. All in the name of art.
In February we released our 2nd single ‘Fly Away’ and thanks to our lovely fans it got into the Top 40. Reggie described Honey Ryder as a ‘new girl band’ which didn’t sit that comfortably with Martyn but he soon forgot about that when we found out our chart position was no.31! More champagne please……ok maybe a pint and a kebab then….
March took us to Texas to perform at South X Southwest, a huge festival where over 2000 bands played over the course of a week. The main street is lined with back to back venues filled with party goers and musicians from noon til 3am every day. We performed 4 gigs, the last one was a special one as it was organised by Tony Moore (Music Impresario and Promoter of The Bedford in London). Thanks to Tony, lots of British musicians including ourselves have had a huge helping hand in the tricky world of music – and playing in Texas was one experience we’ll never forget. (Although after several shots of ‘white lightening’ the last night has become a little hazy)
The second night we were in Texas, a chance encounter with Barbara Orbison, widow of the late great Roy Orbison, meant that we are now involved with a very exciting event to commemorate Roy’s birthday on 23rd April, at the Gibson Club in London. Barbara and Tanja Crouch (Vice President of Orbison Productions) heard ‘Rising Up’ and invited us to record a Roy Orbison track of our choice which will then be entered into a competition on iTunes. (If we win we’ll get a Gibson guitar!). We chose a song from Roy’s back catalogue called ‘Love in Time’. It’s a beautiful song and we’re really proud of how it’s turned out…..in fact we’re thinking of including it on our debut album ‘Rising Up’)
We’ve also spent a lot of time writing new material to prepare for the next Honey Ryder album which is something we absolutely LOVE doing. In fact we can’t wait to start recording again as ‘Love in Time’ has simply wetted the appetite.
Last week Martyn and I almost lost control of our bladders when we found out that our 3rd single ‘Choices’ had been playlisted on Radio 2. To get national radio play is a huge deal and a dream come true to be frank. It’s onwards and most definitely upwards from here people!
